  • In 1740, with the encouragement of Charles and John Wesley, the Reverend George Whitfield founded Bethesda Home for Boys as an orphanage on land granted by King George. Benjamin Franklin was an early contributor. Bethesda is now the oldest continuously-operated children’s home in the United States. The Bethesda School provides grades three through twelve to its 125 resident and non-resident boys. Bethesda boys, alumni and staff continue to be guided by the three core values the Rev. Whitefield believed essential in building young men: Love of God, Love of Learning, and a Strong Work Ethic. Bethesda offers remedial & preparatory curriculums. Tuition is based on income. Bethesda is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Georgia Higher Education Authority. At Bethesda, 90 percent of the students graduate, on time. An astounding 75 percent of Bethesda graduates go on to college -- while the remaining 25% choose either technical school or the military. Students who enroll at Bethesda with academic challenges receive remedial help as they scholastically “catch up”. Others are encouraged to achieve at a more-appropriate pace.
